Resolution The image resolution, often called simply the resolution, of a computer display is one of its most important specifications This is the extent to which it can show detail The better the resolution, the sharper the image Resolution can be specified in terms of dot size or dot pitch This is the diameter, in millimeters (mm), of the individual elements in the display the smallest unbreakable pieces A good display has a dot pitch that is a small fraction of a millimeter A typical CRT has a dot pitch of 025 or 026 mm The smaller the number, the higher the resolution and, all other factors being equal, the crisper the image in an absolute sense Image resolution can be specified in a general sense as a pair of numbers, representing the number of pixels (picture elements) the screen shows horizontally and vertically For a particular screen size, the greater the number of pixels the unit can display, the crisper the image In personal computers, typical displays have 800 600 resolution (800 pixels wide by 600 pixels high) or 1024 768 resolution A few can work up to 1600 1200 or even higher Screen Size Screen sizes are given in terms of diagonal measure; a popular size is 43 cm (17 in) This will work quite well at 800 600 resolution For higher resolution, a larger screen is preferable, such as 48 cm (19 in) or 53 cm (21 in) A high-end display is crucial for doing graphics work, when doing serious research on the Internet, in remote-control robotics, and in computer gaming Besides these practical advantages, a sharp display is more pleasant to work with than a marginal one Along with memory and hard-drive capacity, the display is one of the most important parts of a computer from a user-friendliness standpoint On the job, long hours at a computer can get tedious even if the machine is perfect An inadequate display can give rise to eye strain and headaches, and can also degrade the quality and accuracy of work done by people using the computer Interlacing and Refresh Rate Another important consideration in the choice of a display is whether or not it uses interlacing Interlacing increases the obtainable resolution, but it also results in a lower refresh rate (number of times the entire image is renewed) A low refresh rate can cause noticeable flickering in the image, and can be especially disruptive in applications where rapid motion must be displayed, such as highend computer gaming A good refresh rate specification is 70 Hz or more For applications not involving much motion, 60 or 66 Hz is adequate for some people, but others complain of eye fatigue because they can vaguely sense the flicker Most people find 56-Hz refresh rates too slow for comfort in any application.

For many releases over a number of years, SQL Server has added newer performance monitoring tools and technologies like DMVs, wait state analysis, extended events (XEvents), the Performance Dashboard, and most recently the Management Data Warehouse (MDW) Each of these new tools and technologies is forward-looking, and you can install each of them on an older installation of SQL Server If you ever have to support both old and newer versions of SQL Server, the only toolkits that you can rely on being present in nearly all versions of SQL Server are the Windows Performance Monitor (PerfMon, also known as Windows System Monitor or SysMon) and some form of SQL tracing tool like SQL Profiler When you re competent with PerfMon and Profiler, you can be effective at troubleshooting and performance monitoring on many releases of SQL Server.

I ve always enjoyed my grandparents use of old-timey words and phrases. When my great-uncle wanted to know what was troubling me, he d always ask What vexes you When it comes to database problems, Gartner Research has already answered that question for us. Their research shows that about 80 percent of database performance problems comes from poorly or improperly coded SQL statements, 15 percent from database design, and 5 percent from poor or inadequate hardware configurations. Contrary to Gartner s wisdom, most attempted remedies to performance problems with database applications are exactly the opposite of what research shows us is the source of the problem. We ve all heard product managers who, when encountering a performance problem with their applications, declare, Let s put in more RAM or another CPU! But if you ve been around for a while, you know that a poorly coded SQL Server application can suck up all the hardware you give it, and still want more. When adding hardware doesn t work, the product manager usually says, Let s try to throw a few more indexes in there. That ought to fix it! But more indexes can t help a query or transaction that doesn t utilize the indexes. By implementing a few simple processes to check your code using PerfMon and Profiler, you can help ensure that all the SQL and T-SQL code used in your application performs optimally.

To get useful information about your SQL Server s behavior, you need to combine the use of both PerfMon and Profiler (server-side traces are a good alternative to Profiler). That s because of the fundamental nature of each tool. PerfMon is great at showing the overall resource consumption of most every area of Windows and of SQL Server. Profiler, on the other hand, shows you specific events as they occur (or fire) inside the SQL Server. By combining the output of both tools, we get a great view of overall resource consumption and the individual SQL Server events that are causing that resource consumption. When resource consumption, say CPU or Disk I/O, gets unacceptably high, we can tell exactly what statement, batch, or job caused it. That way, we know exactly where to focus our attention when rewriting or tuning a particular SQL Server activity.
